The CO in, turn, reacts with the iron sand or iron oxide pellet to metallic iron i.e.,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C + CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp; =&nbsp; 2CO&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fe<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub> + CO&nbsp; =&nbsp; 2Fe&nbsp; +&nbsp; 3CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp; or,&nbsp; FeO + CO&nbsp; =&nbsp; Fe&nbsp; +&nbsp; CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>yielding an overall reaction,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fe<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>&nbsp; +&nbsp; 3C&nbsp; =&nbsp; 2Fe&nbsp; +&nbsp; 3CO or, &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; FeO&nbsp; +&nbsp; C&nbsp; =&nbsp; Fe&nbsp; +&nbsp; CO&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The success of the carbonaceous reduction of iron oxide opened doors for the beneficiation of other minerals which coexist with oxides of iron also known as mineral sands such as titanium dioxide (ilmenite ore) and nickel oxide (laterite ore). The Becher Process for the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite involves the roasting of titaniferous materials TiO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/li><li>Prior to this beneficiation of (Fe<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>.
